A Verwood mother of three has just completed her 23rd trek to raise funds and awareness for Macmillan cancer support.
Pam Smith joined 27 other trekkers in the Annapurnas, walking for six days. They hiked through thick rhododendron forest and climbed above the tree line in storms and hail to camp among the great snow covered mountains of the Himalayas at 3000m. Pam experienced the spectacular landscapes of the Annapurna Massif, where wild monkeys and orchids could be seen in the high forests, crossing the Mardi Khola river and meeting local people in their homes. The trek took her eastwards through fields ploughed by buffalo, visiting tiny villages, crossing huge, precariously swaying bridges and wading through icy rivers. She camped along the way with basic conditions and no washing facilities. The trek was physically challenging but a hugely rewarding experience.
Pam, who pays for her own treks, raised £3,500 for Macmillan. She said: " Not only do I have unforgettable memories and a great bunch of new friends, but I know it will make a huge difference to the lives of people affected by cancer."
In recent years Pam has raised an impressive £40,000 by taking part in trekking events. She plans to trek with Macmillan cancer support again in the autumn of 2016. She offers talks with slides to local groups and is always pleased to receive items for tombolas or sponsorship for Macmillan Cancer support.
