The windmills and capitelles of Faugeres

The windmills and capitelles of Faugeres 4.7km/2H , Yellow markers. This is not a difficult walk but there is some climbing at the start of the walk. The walk begins at the car park in Faugeres (the are 3 car parks but we tend to park at the selles de fete one. Now head uphill following the yellow markers. At the top of the hill after the last house is a small path on your left (The muleteers path), take this up through the oak woods to reach the windmills. Normally there are some very fine views of the area from the viewing tower, but not today, at least the rain stopped for us. There are several picnic benches here too and normally an abundance of wildflowers, even the early purple orchids are late this year. Take the track down the other side of the hill, following the yellow markers and then turn left at the junction. Soon you will reach the stone capitelles, once used by farmers and shepherds. Do go down to look at the first two capitelles on your right as they are all named and have their own history. Panels tell you about them. Now turn left next to the green water container and turn right at the next junction. There are more capitelles to your right and later to your left is a lovely village of restored capitelles. The zigzag takes you down (normally wonderful views here) to a small track to your right (you can keep to the main track if you would rather). The smaller path is where a chick pea farm once lived in his capitelle. Now you reach the The Frog. It's a junction of ancient routes that looks from above like a frog. There is also a stone frog here. Take the smaller track marked yellow back into the village. I take the yellow/red route down through the village as it's the most interesting.

Les Trois Tours, Faugeres

Les Trois Tours, Faugeres this afternoon. Lots of people up there enjoying a Sunday afternoon stroll. You can park at several points along the little road leading up from the D909. It's a good road all the way until you reach the corner where you turn for the old windmills on the hill. From here you can walk out to the old stone cabrieres where the hill farmers once lived, enjoy the ancient route leading to the Frog (a junction of ancient routes), go north towards Soumartre or visit the lovely mills themselves.

The windmills at Faugeres. A nice walk but lots of hunters about which made it a little worrying as we were watchful as to where they were and listening for the dogs.

We didn't do the whole walk as we had visitors with us today. We walked up to the windmills, with lovely views and then after walking back down we walked around to the stone huts just above the Frog.

I think in the end it was about the the same amount of walking but we did both parts as return trips.
