Portiragnes Plage, Grande Marie and the Canal du Midi.

Portiragnes Plage, Grande Marie and the Canal du Midi. 10km/ 3H. easy. This is a really beautiful and contrasting walk.

There are 2 ways to do the walk. Either by staying in the wild area and following both the Grande Marie and Rivierette, canal du midi and then down to the beach or by taking the Grand Fossé du Noou then taking the Canal du midi back into Portiragnes Plage (7km).

Start the walk by taking the D612 and then the D37 into Portiragnes Plage. Turn right to find the west beach and Etang. Parking either on the road at start of shorter walk or in the beach car park.

Walk back up the side of the Etang from the beach and where the path finishes at a roundabout you will see signs for the walk beside the beautiful Etang. Here you will see herons and little egrets, the etang is pretty with the changing colours of Samphire and sea lavender.

Walk around the Etang until you reach a large barrier for keeping sea water out and removing flooding freshwater.

If you want to do the shorter circular walk turn right but the longer walk continues on a beautiful path with whispering reeds edging the route and birds of prey sorrowing above. There are white horses and donkeys here too.

At a right turn follow the little road to the canal du midi. Turn right onto the path running beside the canal, here we saw some lovely cattle and sheep with a sheep and dog walking the route as well.

Shortly after a small picnic area you turn right down a small, straight path (Grand Fossé du Noou), this will bring you back to the barrier, but along the route you will discover fish jumping in the water, rabbits, and thousands flamingos in the lagoons to your left.

Once back at the barrier retrace your route back to the beach, where you can walk on the wild and beautiful beach in either direction. (If you are taking the other route go up the Grand Fossé du Noou and right onto the canal du midi.

The route then turns into Portiragnes Plage along a cycle track and right at a roundabout or continue on down to the beach and walk back either along the beach or behind the dunes. The routes are cycleable too.
